EXCERPT #1

“He wants her thrown in the dumpster.” I grimaced as I approached the mattress. “Help me.” I gestured towards the body. “I can't carry her on my own.” Even if I could, I wasn't doing this alone.

“I'm not throwing her away like garbage!” Lisa crossed her arms. “Think of something else, Jacqueline.”

“We could grab some wood, wrap her body, and burn her.” I glanced around the small bedroom. It was mostly empty, except for the dresser against the wall. There were  no trinkets, no signs of another life outside of Genesis. I couldn't help but wonder if anyone missed her from back home.

“How are   we going to do that without getting caught?” Lisa asked.

“I don't know. Craynor will know we did it.” We were the ones that were told to throw the body away. "We could find a place in the far end of the lot and bury her.”
Lisa frowned. “No, I like the idea of burning her body. We'd be making a statement. Anita would have approved.”

“If we get caught, we'll be killed,” I reminded her. So much for staying out of  trouble.

“He's killing his servants. You don't think that demands attention?” Lisa huffed. “I would have liked to know what I was getting involved in before I worked here.”

“It wasn't like you had a choice.” I reminded her bitterly. That was what we were fighting for: our freedom to make choices. Whether they were right or wrong, they were our choices to make.

“Even so,” Lisa scoffed, “she deserves more than being thrown away like a piece of trash.”

Footsteps  clomped through the hallway, just outside the door. “Well whatever we decide, we need to do it fast.”

By Ruth Silver

 Genre- YA Dystopian

In the future dystopian society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its citizens the perfect system.  There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone. The one requirement is to follow the rules without question, including the government's match in marriage and "The Day of the Chosen", a lottery that randomly selects families to conceive children as natural means hasn't existed in generations.  Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as she's arrested and thrown in prison.  The only crime committed, her existence.  Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from "The Day of the Chosen." The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple fact would destroy the perfect system.

With Joshua's help, Olivia breaks free of prison and is forced on the run.  Together they set out to find the promised rebel town in search of a new home and new life together.  Their situation seems less than promising as they reach the town of Haven.  New rules and customs must be adhered to in order to stay.  Leaving would mean most certain death in the large expanse of the Gravelands.  Time is running out as the government mounts an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her. Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.

Excerpt #4

Joshua came into my room, ignoring all rules as he helped push the dresser further from the wall, knocking it to the floor allowing me more than enough room to grab the journal and go. I tossed it inside the pack and Joshua put the map inside before we stepped out of my bedroom. I glanced down the hall, not sure what I expected to see. To the right the dormitory had been hit, and a roar of smoke and fire filled the confined space. Jacqueline was gone. Hand-in-hand we ran in the opposite direction toward the staircase.

My eyes burned. Coughing, I refused to let go of his hand as we stepped outside. Drones

weren’t the only things attacking Haven. Tanks rolled into town. A few soldiers jumped off, taking over the perimeter, guns drawn. I paused, gripping Joshua's hand as we were shrouded in smoke.

Just a few feet away, a soldier lifted his weapon and unleashed fury on a group of innocent people. I covered my mouth with my hand to keep from crying out when a child no older than three hit the cement. His eyes remained open as blood seeped from his head. He didn't move. Didn't blink. It took only a moment to realize he’d died instantly. All I could do was stand there in shock.

"We have to move," I heard Joshua's voice, but it didn't register. The smoke swirled around
us and gunfire erupted in every direction. He grabbed my arm. "Olivia, I need you to focus." I nodded once, trying my best to clear the cobwebs from my mind. I
couldn't, though. I wanted to un out to the child and protect him, but it was too late. I was
too late. They were here because of me, innocent blood on my hands. I felt the heat radiating from the dormitory and my eyes flashed back. "I need you here with me, Olive."

"I am," I insisted, knowing if I didn't focus we'd both be dead. I spotted more soldiers – their
standard issue uniform and the Cabal crest on their jacket sleeve told me all I needed to know. The government had come looking for us. "Which way?" I couldn't see the exit. With the smoke enveloping us and the fear coursing through my veins, I forgot the direction we'd come from.

Anny Books = Interview Author

1 What was your inspiration for these books ?

I love writing and I wanted to write a Dystopian series for young
adults. I’d read a lot of dystopian novels since
The
Hunger Games
and wanted a story where the country (Cabal) was designed to be Utopian. Of course there are a lot of outside influences that make this society far from Utopian.

2 What kinds of books do you like to read when you are not writing?

I love reading young adult novels. A few of my favorites are The Fault in Our Stars by John Green,
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

3 Did you cry when you finished writing your book?

There weren’t any tears, but I did feel a huge sense of accomplishment at finishing the trilogy.
4 Can you tell us a little about the book?

Aberrant is a young adult dystopian science fiction series. It’s about a girl that’s eighteen who has been forced into marriage by the government. On her wedding day, she discovers  that she wasn’t conceived the way everyone else is, and her existence is illegal. She is forced on the run and joins the rebel alliance in order to survive. The second book,
Moirai continues on seven months later as Olivia and the rebel alliance mount an attack on the Governors Mansion and try to fix a broken system.

5 Who is your favorite character in the book?

I love Olivia. She’s grown as a character and I think that’s  important for you to see her from the beginning of the series, until the very end. She’s strong, fierce, determined and refuses to give up. She’s willing to sacrifice herself in order to get the job done.

6 Do you have a favorite time to write?

I typically spend the late morning and early afternoon writing. If I have a hard deadline, I will work at it all day.
