I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember; journals, poems, and short stories. I always wanted to write a novel and started several over the years, but for some reason I could never see them through to the end. Until Eva came along. I was abandoned as a child, at about the age of 2 or 3 which I strangely never gave a lot of thought to. Then I became a mother.

When my youngest child was about 2, I watched him sleeping one night as I often did. But this night, I was gripped by this heart-wrenching realization that he was about the age that I was when my parents left me. Something stirred inside of me, and eventually Eva was born. “Leaving Eva” began as a story of a girl who was heartlessly abandoned, and then her story took on a life of its own.

It was no longer the story that I began, and it became something else entirely. I am happy to have finally gotten in touch with my inner Author. She’s always been there lying dormant inside of me, reflecting in other parts of my life. But now she is awake and alive, shining through me every day. I am very fortunate to have a wonderful supportive husband, two beautiful children, and an incredible family. I have a career that is rewarding and challenging and I get to work with amazing, funny, talented people every day.

Writing has been an escape, a refuge, and an outlet for me. I feel so lucky to get to channel my energy and my creativity through my writing. I hope that my readers will continue to stay with me through my journey as I grown and evolve. I am so grateful for the support I’ve received and the amazing people that I’ve encountered along the way!

Sharing Milk and a Life

I knew that I was so screwed, both literally and figuratively, the second we both realized the condom had fallen off. Not only was I mortified but I was also grossed out. I mean, really grossed out. It wasn’t as though we got to do it all that often, and when we did, this happened.

I really felt the situation I was in was pretty shocking, especially since it was before 8am and I barely had time to shake the sleep off before I realized he was on top of me, which I thought I might like at first. Then realized that it was Tom and sex with him was usually awkward and not fun at all. I didn’t even know why I was here, with him, still.

He wasn’t exactly the guys of my dreams, but that’s what happens when you become too comfortable with your life and stop desiring more. The first guy to call you “honey” becomes your boyfriend, whether that was the initial plan or not. The relationship just kind of happens and then you wake up and realize that it’s been half a decade and you are still together. At least that’s what happened with us. We were an odd couple, but still by most people’s definition, a couple.

He was crabby and grumpy, and I was happy and optimistic, and we didn't really fit together at all. We just existed together for reasons I, nor anyone else could understand but for the time being it worked and nobody really scrutinized it too closely. I knew the second we realized the condom had fallen off that things just weren’t going to end well.

Tom looked at me, his light brown eyes wide, and said, "Oh, shit!" as he backed up from the condom like it was a snake about to bite him in the nuts. Really? That's all he’s going to say to me about it? Oh, shit!? Well, Happy freaking 25th birthday to me!

****

I knew I didn't have anyone to blame but myself about staying with Tom, in a passionless, loveless relationship. I was young and maybe even a bit lazy, inand out of college when I could afford it. I was completely lost in my life with no idea how to find myself but then again, it’s not as though I was making much of an effort.

I was tired of waiting tables, but I didn't really know how to do anything else. Besides, it was good money and I didn’t have a lot of options. There was nothing I could do about the mishap at the moment. I went downstairs without even bothering to say anything to Tom. He rolled over and was already snoring away, so I went into the kitchen and made some coffee and poured myself a bowl of cereal. I tried to pet our grey cat, Willow, who had just jumped on the counter to watch the coffee brew but he scurried away from me just out of arm’s length. He stared at me with an air of disdain while he licked his paws.

I hated cats. I especially hated this selfish fat cat. He didn't want anything to do with me unless I was feeding him. Brat! But now, all I could think about was that stupid broken disgusting condom. My phone buzzed. "Happy birthday, my lovely. Party tonight. XO Anna" Anna was texting me first thing in the morning, like she usually did. My Bestie since the first grade, Anna always remembered my birthday, usually before anyone else. I couldn't wait to tell her what happened, but I didn't want to do it in a text conversation. I wanted to tell her in person.

"Wait till I tell you what happened first thing this morning." I knew she would be shocked when I told her that Tom climbed on me, since he hadn’t done so in months. But she didn't respond which was just as well because I didn’t really want to have a text conversation about it anyway. She was working, trying to be a responsible adult, unlike myself so she didn’t have time for my drama, even if it was my birthday. It was 9 o’clock AM on my birthday and already, I felt depressed. My birthday usually made me feel depressed, but not this early. It typically hit by noon, but thanks to the morning mishap, it was creeping up on me a lot sooner.

It struck me that I hoped he didn't think the morning’s disaster was my birthday present, which I could completely see! An overwhelming feeling of disdain for Tom his stupid grey cat came over me before I could help myself and I started reflecting about our relationship, as I often did when I wasn’t happy. Tom wasn’t very nice to me.

He was typically harsh and condescending, and lacked a filter, no matter where he was or who as around. Whatever he was thinking, just flew out of his mouth. The other morning when he realized I forgot to buy milk he snarled at me, “What that fuck were you thinking Lys? How am I supposed to eat my damn cereal now?” I cringed when it happened, but I realized that it was a typical scenario. It didn’t seem to matter if it was milk, laundry, what I made for dinner, or what I wore to the bar, Tom just wasn’t pleased about something.

Whether it was my birthday or a random Thursday, I often wondered why we were still together, sharing cartons of milk and a life. And now this condom incident. My face started to get hot and I realized that I was freaking out over the thought of it. I had always been so careful with my birth control, no matter who the guy was, or how many times I slept with him! I didn't want to have a baby, ever. A messy, loud, time-sucking expensive baby. I always told everyone that I never wanted to have a baby.

Babies were dirty and they spit up and shit everywhere. Every parent I knew was exhausted. They never slept and said their children took up every second of your time. They attempted to sound happy about it. But you could tell from the bags under their eyes and copious amounts of caffeine they needed to function, that it wasn’t as magical as they tried to make it seem.

Babies were but, but was it worth the sacrifice of having sagging boobs, getting fat, and having stretched out lady parts? I had to admit that there were a few babies that were adorable, but the majority of them just had big heads, weird hair, and looked like aliens. The thought of that big head pushing itself out of a very sensitive area of the body made me want to vomit. I decided before I ever lost my virginity to Bobby Baughman, that I had no desire to ever have one of those things popping out of my body.

About Icing on the Cake

Nia and Conn’s wedding will be fairytale perfect…if their siblings can get along.

Free-spirited, anti-establishment Sara has always been on the outside of her family’s fairytale mold. Now she’s being forced smack into the middle of it at her sister Nia’s wedding. Alongside the cocky and annoyingly sexy best man—Conn’s cop brother.

Curtis doesn’t buy in to organized romance and fairytales. But for his brother, he’ll throw on a tux and fake it for a few hours. His flak vest would have been a better choice around the maid of honor. He should have brought his handcuffs too, because somebody needs to restrain the dark-haired spitfire—and he’s just the man for the job.

One night to indulge the spark between them, then goodbye—that was the agreement. Curtis isn’t looking for a relationship and he sure doesn’t want a troublemaker for a girlfriend. The last thing Sara needs in her daily life is a cop looking over her shoulder, no matter how hot he is.

But giving in to their chemistry is much more fun than giving it up…

Excerpt

Curtis gave Sara the reprieve she obviously needed for the duration of the drive to town. Whatever her reasons, she seemed to want everybody, him included, to brand her as a bitch. Maybe she was—in part. But there was more to her than that. Had to be, for good people like Conn and Nia to hold her close in their daily lives. Then there was his gut. It told him to keep pushing, that if he dug deep enough, he’d find more than the hot woman with a giant attitude and a smart mouth.

His gut had never failed him. He shook his head while pulling into the gas station. Why the hell was he thinking—or caring—about what made Sara tick? He’d agreed to keep an eye on her, make sure she didn’t jump the rails and ruin his brother’s wedding. That job didn’t require understanding her on a deeper level. A side effect of his job, always trying to figure people out. That’s where this interest in Sara had come from.

Nothing more than that. He hadn’t even turned the ignition off before Sara removed her seat belt. “I’ll pump it,”she said, going for the door handle. He caught her arm and pulled her toward him. “Save your pumping for later.” She rolled her eyes, though clearly for effect. Her smile gave her away, whether she’d intended it to or not. “It’s my car. I can pump my own gas.” “Not while I’m around.”He hopped out, grabbed the doorframe and leaned back into the vehicle.

“Unless you’re wearing short-shorts, high heels and a bikini top. Then I’m going to insist that you pump the gas. While I supervise, of course.” “Oh my god, dude. Clichémuch?” “There’s a reason clichés exist, babe. They work.”He winked and left her smiling and laughing in the front seat. That’s how he wanted her. Well, one of the ways.

He filled her Trans Am’s tank until it couldn’t hold one more drop, hung the nozzle on the pump and returned to the driver’s seat. “What?”he asked when Sara scowled across at him. “Did you fill it?” “Yeah.”He clicked his seat belt into place.

“You should have asked my permission before you did that.” He leaned over the center console, invading her personal space and not giving a fuck. “I don’t ask permission. When you’re with me, you’re going to get filled up.”

Excerpt

“So how did you like our wine?” he gestures with a hint of a knowing glee at the half empty evidence on the table. “Umm, it was good.” He cocks an eyebrow. “Frankly, I’m not much of a wine person. I’m more a sweet cocktail kind of gal. It was very good, but I couldn’t elaborate on the taste or anything else like you experts would…” “I see…” he says somewhat pensive.

He motions for me to take a seat at the sofa, and settles himself on the coffee table in front of me. His legs are slightly parted, almost touching mine nudged between them. He takes the bottle and deftly gets rid of the cork. “Let’s try to do it together,” he says, his voice a degree huskier.

“You need to use your scent, taste and sight to evaluate wine.” He gives me a soft, yet very suggestive look. “Sight,” he says as he brings the bottle to his mouth. His lips wrap around the narrow opening and he takes a slow sip. I swallow hard. He then inclines his head toward me, cups my neck to slightly tilt my head back and touches his mouth to mine. As I part my lips, his tongue reaches in with some of the wine and starts to stroke mine through the rich moistness.

It twirls around, letting the delectable liquid reach every part of my mouth. I suck hard on his tongue, tasting the wine and my desire that grows with every erotic stroke of his. “Taste,” he says low as he pulls back. “Keep your eyes closed, Liv. I’m going to do that again. I want you to suck on it, swirl it in your mouth, and try to think what flavors come to your mind.” And he does, and everything inside me tightens, and everything around me melts, and everything about me arouses.

“Open them, now tell me if it’s balanced,” he kisses my lips gently. “Complex.” Another kiss. “Evolved.” A more profound one. Tastes like an orgasm? I close my eyes, lick my slightly pulsing lips, his hand trails slowly under the hem of my dress, holding my thigh. I lick my lips again. “It tastes … warm, and rich.” “Mmm, hmm,” his hand sprawls, making my skin burn at the spot.

“Fruity, and sexy,” I add quietly, my eyes still closed, the edge of my lips slightly curving. “Keep going,” his other hand cups my cheek, and his thumb is touching, not touching my lips. “It tastes like something I want again in my mouth.” My eyelids slowly lift and I look at him with everything that rages inside of me. “Sold,” he says gruffly, with a hint of a smile. “Oh, and there’s the scent,” he adds next, nuzzling the area just below my ear. “Divine.”

Shy Ann’s was next in Quinn’s quest to find Sabrina. He opened the door and surveyed the patrons. Sure enough, she sat by the bar, the top of her lovely head barely visible among the crowd. No one sat next to her She swiveled in her chair as if an unknown force made her turn around. After a brief second of eye contact, she slowly and deliberately turned away from the door.

A surge of energy passed through him and he marched up to the other side of the bar, away from Sabrina and near the bell that hung over the counter. “Melora!” The other woman turned at the sound of her name but frowned when she saw who called it. She poured him a Guinness and slammed it down on the counter. “Drink this and go.” “Melora, I have a problem!” Instead of ringing the bell and getting the attention of everyone at the bar, Melora turned away and got another drink order. Quinn steeled himself with determination and rang the bell himself.

“Hey, Dr. Bankhead! I have a problem!” The crowd quieted down and every pair of eyes focused on him. Murmured conversations carried through the restaurant, but he held Melora’s gaze. Her angry gaze, with eyes narrowed and lips pursed together. To keep from yelling what she really wanted, Quinn was sure. “Quinn has a problem!” she shouted through gritted teeth. He didn’t care. “The doctor is in!” roared the crowd.

“What’s your problem? Asshole.” She said the last part quietly enough that only those around the bell heard. He took a deep breath. This was it. His one chance. “I’m involved with the smartest, prettiest, funniest woman on the planet. Only something happened and now she thinks I’m the biggest jerk to ever walk the hallowed streets of Harbin.” “Then I’d say you should cut your losses and get the hell out of our town.” “I’m not finished.

The thing that happened. It was completely independent of anything I did. Only she won’t let me close enough to explain.” Melora tapped her finger on the bar and shot a look over at her sister. Sabrina shook her head. “If this woman is as smart as you say she is, then you’re out of luck. The doctor has spoken!” The crowd cheered in approval, but Quinn wasn’t done. He flipped a nickel in the jar that read Psychiatric Help, 5¢, and rang the bell again. When Melora didn’t turn around, he kept ringing. “What now?” The crowd quieted again. Quinn ignored Melora and turned to Sabrina.

“I can’t leave it like this.” Sabrina hopped off her stool and came to his side of the bar amid the hushed whispers of the other patrons. Her lips fixed in a small half-smile and ran her fingers lightly down his chest. Her eyes told him this was not an act of forgiveness but he braced himself for whatever she wanted to dish out. He deserved it. “Quinn, I believe I act for all womankind when I do this.”

She lifted his glass of beer and poured the drink on his head, then shook the remnants out. The cool shock of the drink was nothing like the ice that replaced the fire in his belly. The crowd quieted down while beer poured down his hair and cheeks and wet his shirt and jeans, eventually dripping to his feet.

“Okay, then.” He held his voice low and smooth. Another bartender tossed him a towel, and he wiped his face, then folded the material neatly and handed it back, his desire tightly reined and shoved into the deep recesses of his soul. “The doctors have spoken!” The patrons roared and he put a twenty dollar bill in the jar. He left without looking back at the woman who had almost changed his life.
